The Solomon Gundy Band
Conscious Sound System Jazz for the 21st Century
The Solomon Gundy Band brings together generations and cultures, blending jazz, electronica, and Afro-diasporic rhythm into something sophisticated, gritty, and soulful.
At its centre is trumpeter Sean Corby, returning after years away from the horn following serious potentially career-ending health challenges. That time away became a period of study, practice, and profound personal transformation — and now those experiences are coming through in a burst of creativity and vision, expressed fully in this project.
Produced by Ashley Slater and Carmen Rizzo, the debut album ‘Hancestry’ features UK legend Courtney Pine, rising star Sultan Stevenson, UK soul voice Julie Dexter, and Trinidad’s Drew Gonsalves of Kobo Town. It’s music shaped by years in the background, now stepping forward with a sound that is personal, collective, and firmly of its time.
The live line-up is a powerful multi-generational and multi-heritage ensemble of young and established UK jazz talent:
Sean Corby trumpet
Nathaniel Cross trombone
Phil Dawson guitar
Ygor Azevedo bass
Daniel Crosby drums
Chris Jerome piano/keys
Graeme Evelyn percussion
“Often driven by super-strong latin and afro-diasporic rhythms this music is at the same time danceable and brain-food, with Corby’s passion for both the jazz tradition and the socio-political never far from the surface.”
Jez Nelson (One Jazz)
